That's Better. I Think.

Advance 7890

I'm a bit cranky today, so I'm glad to be able to show this dress, which is listed by Chez Cemetarian.

You know that cranky feeling you get when you've tried to talk someone out of doing something stupid, something that might well backfire on them, and they go and do it anyway? That's the cranky I have today, matched up with a little bit of a head cold. Somehow looking at this dress makes it slightly better.

I really like the completely superfluous straps. I think this would be a great dress for a gangster moll in a movie, because you KNOW, at some point, the Bad Man She Loves In A Hopeless Way will grab her by those straps. And you will have known that the Bad Man will do that from the first moment of seeing her in this dress, but no matter HOW MUCH you yell at the screen, she will never stop loving the Bad Man.

The two-tone version is pretty great, too, and of course, the jacket. But it's the moll in red who first caught my attention. Why won't she realize that the Bad Man is wrong for her, and that she should rat him out to the handsome G-Man instead? Because you can't talk people out of doing stupid things, that's why.

The pattern's B34 and has an opening bid of $5.99, with no bids right now. It ends in three days, so get cracking …

  1. I think I really need this one… and Phillps is a family name! I better ask if we had any gun molls in our past : )On that same note, when I worked in a bookstore in college the other employees and I would add our names to the inside covers of the galleys we read and loaned them out around Boston. We added a note to whomever read it next do the same. Wonder where they are now…~Becky

  2. I love it when I see patterns with little design elements like this. Things that are so simple and easy to add to existing patterns. This pic is definitely doing in my Dress Inspiration folder.–Lydia

  3. I didn’t like the straps at all. It looks like it’s holding something in…her breasts? her armpits? her arms? Maybe holding her body together? I liked the rest of the dress, the two-tone, the jacket. Yes, Lady in Red does look like a moll. Look at that face. Does she know something and she’s not giving it up?-judi

  4. Please forgive this randome comment, but I love how the models on these older patterns pull their shoulders forward in a completely un-normal fashion. But then a couple of weeks ago I was watching Tyra Banks on America’s Next Top Model and curled her shoulders in that exact was as an example of how to turn a pose into a “model pose”. What comes around goes around, eh?

  5. Dang it Erin, I’ve been watching this pattern for three days! Now people are going to BID on it! It’s MINE! MINE I TELL YOU!! grumble grumble. It is fabulous, isn’t it? It seems like a dress that one would feel like a movie star in.

  6. I think the straps are kind of weird too. I think I’d like them better if they were just a contrast band or something. Off to look up “moll.” OK, maybe I AM a dork. (hope my kids never read this admission.)

  7. And the moll in red’s eyebrows perfectly epitomize my dictionary’s definition of “arch”: cunning or sly; esp., sportively mischievous; roguish.I like the straps, though they do remind me of a backward version of that game we girls played in 6th grade. You know, the one where you turn your back to your friends and wraps your arms around yourself and appear to be loving yourself up!

  8. No, no, the moll in red tucks her (small, pearl-handled, but deadly) gun into the straps and covers up with the little jacket when she goes out with BMSLHW. You need to watch Double Indemnity again Erin, this girl isn’t making any mistakes she doesn’t want to make…

  9. Erin, I totally understand the cranky feeling. That was my Wednesday. I had accountants telling ME how to write a press release. (I’ve been a journalist since birth – was an editor for 8 years – I know how to write a press release for the love of Ernie Pyle!) Anyway, I was so cranky I was forced to stay home yesterday and sew!Fabulous dress!
