Gimme an "S"!

Butterick 8500

You see why I HAD to buy this pattern, right? It's completely obvious? No question in your mind? First of all, it's a shirtdress, which is 50 "Erin Must Buy" points right there without even totaling up the extra points for the stripes, the standup collar, and the raglan sleeves. Add the insanely perky demeanor of the women in the illustration and you have me clicking the "Add to Cart" button before I even have the chance to blink. (Actually, looking at this pattern, I was afraid to blink, in case the women in the illustration MOVED when I wasn't looking.)

I'm thinking etsy seller tiddlywink might be glad to have this gone from her house. I feel I should put this in a box with something heavy on top, just in case.

And heaven knows what might happen when I actually MAKE the dress. Expect me to be even more chipper than usual, and that's saying something …

  1. I think there should also be concern that the woman in back might pass along whatever dread disease she appears to have. Would spraying the envelope with Lysol be out of line?

  2. WRT the box with something heavy on top, you should read Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat and its sequel. Theyre kids chapter books, so budget 1 night per book. Maybe 2 if you like to stop for tea and cookies, which means also stopping for plenty of potty breaks. Cricket

  3. Maybe with this dress you can just lay the peices and the envelope onthe fabric and the energetic ladies in the illustration will make the dress for you while you sleep!

  4. I have two things to address.1. Shirtdresses are sent from heavens above. And Im never wrong.2. That amount of perky made me make myself a drink. And then another. Yet I still feel tarnished with happy. It is a sign, I actually need a third one.

  5. Ive never seen this illustrator before. The look is kind of in The Archies vein, isnt it? PS: If you lock those girls in a box, I bet theyll build a little barn in there and put on a show.

  7. The collar is great, and I love the way the striped fabric is cut vertically for the buttons. But doesnt this dress look somewhat inflated, almost a size too big for these girls? Must be all that perkiness causing the dress to poof with enthusiasm! The stripes are great. Could it be a peppermint dress for Christmas, or is that too obvious?Dawn

  9. Wow! That! Is! A! Lot! Of! Perky! I would advise playing only funeral dirges while you work on this dress, lest something more animated cause the woman in red to jump out of the envelope and beat you about the head with the Perky Paddle while sing-songing Cheer up, grumpyface! Other than that, Im sure itll be a great dress. Its too, too adorable, which is doubtless the reason for the large amount of PERKY exuding from the woman in front. I think she must be leaching energy from the woman in back; it certainly explains the latters green-tinged complexion.

  10. Cheerfulness seems to have gone out of style along with non-strapless awards show dresses! Lets bring it back! If I had this dress, Id wear it *daily.*

  11. Im now wondering if they have helium packs under the skirts. Theyre unusually buoyant. I wouldnt put it past these imps to be part of a synchronized sky dancing team, preparing for lift-off.

  12. The skin condition of View B Woman is my fault, not the illustrators. I had my scanner set to something wonky, and it posterized the image! I would re-scan as proof, but the pattern is on tour right now, heading to its new home.I wonder myself about the hand/hip placement on View A. Is she wearing panniers under there?

  13. I just bought a ready made dress just like this at the thrift store the other day!! My question for you is does this dress call for shoulder pads? My dress didnt come with any but it seems like it could use some? It doesnt look like there WERE any there that someone had cut out, but yet when I put it on….just wondering. Thanks 🙂
