Unrealistic Fantasies: Shoe Division

Louboutin tape measure shoes

I know at least two folks sent me this link — Tricia, and someone else [Lisa?], feel free to step forward in the comments — and, well, wow.

These would be so much fun to pair with a stunt dress … you know, if I had a spare $795 (!) plus whatever it costs these days to hire four strong men to carry you on a litter. Because they’re also FOUR INCHES HIGH (100mm). (For what it’s worth, I do have a couple of pairs of four-inch heels which I wear on occasion. Occasions where I will be mostly sitting down, which are fewer and farther between these days.)

The older I get the more I value mobility over beauty (perhaps I’ve come to believe there’s more beauty in mobility?). Last Tuesday (according to my pedometer) I walked more than ten miles; last Wednesday more than seven, and on both days that walking time was prime thinking time, and I was thinking about something other than “jeez, my feet really hurt!”

Late last Wednesday night, round about mile 6, I passed a well-dressed couple on the street and overheard the woman say to the man, “I don’t think you have any idea of how much my feet hurt right now!” When I looked at his impatient face (and his comfortable shoes) it was clear that he didn’t. And her shoes weren’t anywhere near this high.

Let’s have a poll!

  1. I used to wear 3″ heels (sandals) on a regular basis with no problem. Then the styles changed and enclosed pointy toes became the norm, and the only sandals were way to dressy for work. Now, there are some lovely high heel sandals, but alas, time has not been kind to my feet. Not only do they require more padding in a shoe, they are not as nice looking as they used to be.

  2. Love high heels, but don’t wear them every single day and have never worn anything over 4.25 inches.

I have to use a lot of carefully positioned gel pads, but, then, wallah, piece of cake.

Also, a few years of pointe work in ballet makes any other shoe seem easy.

  3. I have worn as high as 4.5 inches (but rarely) I find the height of the heel matters little but the fit of the shoe is what makes a shoe comfortable and uncomfortable.

  4. I wear anything from no heel to about 5 inches. But that’s with a 3/4 inch (that’s about 1.5 cm, right?) platform at the front of the shoe, so effectively only a little over 4.
I find that with a pair of high heels, balance is everything. It used to be the case that cheap heels were improperly balanced, making them very hard to walk on. That difference is less now.
I almost answered ‘I only wear heels when the shoe is so beautiful I can’t help myself’ but that wouldn’t be fair. If I’m looking for pretty shoes (so they don’t have to be very practical) I will always look at high heels.

  5. I had a hard time answering this because I properly need two replies – special occasions only AND 3″ or under only. I have a severe dislike of uncomfortable shoes and have never understood the appeal of the “pretty” when it comes to footwear. I buy my shoes well padded or pad them out so I can walk in them. To my mind, there is nothing feminine or attractive about being hampered by your clothes, including shoes. Wow, I guess I’m somewhat dictatorial about this, ha.

  6. This Sunday my husband was part of a charity walk which required teams of men to walk a mile in a pair of ladies’ shoes, and he placed second in the highest heel wearing a pair of my wedges (blue-and-white striped with ankle ties, and accessorised with red nail varnish) that are, at most, two inches high.

He reported calf pain immediately after the walk, and this morning his Achilles heel still hurt him – Well yes, that’s why I don’t wear heels very often.

  7. I vere between super silly high, about 3″ for work and no shoes at all! It depends on my mood and the outfit, but in general I love a good heel and if it’s beautiful even better! I’d love a pair of petrol blue heeled courts – I have no idea what I’d wear them with though…

  8. I wear both. I ride a bike everywhere, sometimes in flats, sometimes in sandals, sometimes in rainboots and sometimes in beautiful high heels. I go through shoes fast, and I guess sometimes high shoes slow me down a bit relative to if I were wearing something different, but it is worth it to me to have the aesthetic options heels provide. I wanted to mention that I’m kind of over the self-righteousness some women exhibit when saying they never wear heels, because they need to be mobile. It’s kind of defensive and kind of insulting. You can walk in high heels. They do different things for you, as far as the way you look and feel, than flat shoes do. Not a better or a worse choice. I think it’s a mistake to imply that women who choose to wear certain shoes are somehow disabling themselves or otherwise sacrificing their agility in the name of a foolish frivolous fashion indulgence, and that’s what I feel like I’m hearing sometimes.

  9. I wear heels three or four times a week, but 2 to 2 1/2 inches is my limit. Three? Maybe, if they were uber-gorgeous and all I had to do was sit down and admire my feet. Four? Good Lord on a pony. No way. (I’m 47, by the way. This may have something to do with it.)

  10. I remember last summer I was downtown in our state capitol one afternoon and saw 3 ‘power suits’ (2 men, 1 woman) briskly walking to lunch. The men were actively engaged in conversation and the woman was walking silently at their side, head down and concentrating on staying upright in the sky high stiletto’s on her feet (definitely 4 inchers).

I don’t think it’s insulting to wonder if she was being hindered in the conversation because her focus was elsewhere; she could also have been paying rapt attention but it didn’t look like it. I certainly don’t think that she was frivolous because of her choice of footwear, but it’d be a shame if she missed a vital part of that conversation because of a desire to fit a proscribed cultural aesthetic.

FWIW, I LOVE heels! And, no, not everyone can wear them and walk easily, including me. Foot and ankle surgery on both L & R sides have rendered that impossible. But I still can dream… :^)

  11. I’m not opposed to high heels just these…they’re not particularly attractive and they’re not wedgies which are infinitely more comfy to wear if you’re after height!

  12. When I was in my early 20s and relatively slim, I wore 3-inch heels often and walked everywhere in them. I might have worn 4-inch heels as well, but I can’t remember. I do remember walking about half a mile through gravel and mud in a pair of high heels because I was going to a concert and didn’t want to bring a second pair of shoes with me. I just scraped off the mud when I got to my destination and all was fine. (they were shiny shoes, possibly patent leather; I can’t remember.)

Now, due to age and way too much weight, wearing 1/2-inch heels (or maybe they were 1-inch) killed my feet after only a couple of hours, and most of that time I was sitting!

I would still love to wear some high heels though, preferably closed-toe pumps. Some day. Maybe.

  13. 30 years ago I wore heels that high on occasions. Now I never do. These days, shoes have to fit into my life, and high heels don’t because I walk a lot.

  14. Only for special occasions, and rarely dancing, but only less than 2″ high.
There’s nothing attractive to me about feet that hurt and being unable to walk normally. I can’t imagine having to wear even 1″ heels every day!

  15. I work retail so my everyday shoes have to be comfortable. And now that I am older and have rheumatoid arthritis I fear comfort has to trump style. I carried a handbag for a while that had an artist rendering of a beautiful shoe on it. Whenever anyone commented I would say, “in my head, I am wearing that shoe. Everyday.”

  16. I’m a sucker for cute heels (and they always look cuter on), but I have learnt that I will not wear even the kittenish of heels in daily life so really only allow myself multiple sneakers. I do have a small curated collection of heels including my go-to pair of secretary character shoes that are around 2in heels, have a leather flower and are particularly adorable no matter what I wear.

  17. I used to wear high heels almost all the time when I was in the Air Force. But they were only about a little over 2″ high. But, wore sturdy form fitting shoes at my part-time job. And “pretty high heels” on my rare spare time dates. After my injury and subsequent medical release from the military I no longer wear high heels. But am in constant search for pretty flats and often jazz up plain ones. Just because I am in a ‘chair don’t mean I can’t still have pretty shoes! LOL!

  18. I thought women were naturals at walking in heels. Okay, I know there are some who cannot but most women make it look so easy. From the postings I understand it is a practiced walk. You also have some crazy choices of heels.

  20. I suffer high heels (in the 2″ range) when I absolutely must; i.e. for court appearances. I have a EE width foot, so it’s almost impossible for me to find heels anyway, and the trend toward pointy-toed dress shoes practically killed me. My toes don’t point, they SPLAY. Usually I wear loafers or clogs, because they have a lot of toe room! I have always been slightly jealous of girls with narrower feet, because no matter how cute I think the shoes are, there’s not much chance my feet will fit. Alas.

  22. I really miss wearing heels. My rheumatoid arthritis became much worse in the last couple of years and it’s just too painful to attempt to wear them. At least there’s a lot of adorable ballet flats and wedges I can wear.

  23. I wear low heels since a terrible bout with plantar fascitis, the passage of years, and now working as a standup teacher. Add a lot of pounds and my feet just can’t handle heels, but I used to love feeling tall in them and wearing them dancing in beautiful dresses. I had a beautiful pair of black patent high heel sandals with heels maybe 3 inches high–beautiful shoes, worth the pain. But now? Not so much. That’s why I wear pants most of the time too–better for helping me look taller above my low shoes.

  24. I love high heels, but I do a lot of walking and don’t get to wear them very often. I think the highest pair I’ve worn was about 4 inches, and I had to wear gel pads just to keep from falling out of them!

I never wear high heels but by “never” I mean nothing over 1 1/2 inches for at least 20 years but I never wore high heels very often. I’ve always been a slave to comfort not fashion.

  26. Only 2″ and under, and only for special occasions! But even low heels, while comfortable at first, become agony after 2-3 hours. Flats, on the other hand, stay comfortable far longer. I love cute flats!

  27. The only heels I wear are boots, and not stiletto ones as despite only being 5’2″ I never learned to walk in those. I’ve literally worn ballet pointe shoes more often than I’ve worn stilettos, and found those easier to walk in!

  28. On a daily basis, it’s clogs, but for going out, or parties, or church it’s heels and the higher the better. I can wear stilettos or an amazing pair of 6 inch Calvin Klein snakeskin pumps but put me in kitten heels or mules and I nearly kill myself. I would wear those Louboutins in a heartbeat if I didn’t have to, you know, pay rent and such.

  29. I have worn heels of all types and sizes, from clogs to stilettos. No more. 15 years ago, I gave myself the best Birthday present ever. Choosing comfort over style, I swore on my 40th Birthday to never again don heels and hose. In all the years since, I have never regretted that decision. My feet are quite happy.
