NY Fashion Week: Diane von Furstenberg

Furstenberg dress
I would SO wear this. I mean, I'd probably take off the flap chest pockets and shorten the sleeves, and I'd check to make sure it was silk or cotton and not polyester jersey first, but I'm all over this fabric and cut. Absolutely.

I'm a bit confused about the relative placement of the right and left side pockets — Liya has her left hand in a pocket that seems to be lower than the patch pocket I think I see on the right. But perhaps this is an artifact of the patented runway-model hip-tilt that would not be apparent on me.

The thing I'm really excited by is trying to find bolt-ends of this fabric. If anyone sees any, send me a shout-out, okay? Because what I *really* want is a circle skirt made out of this fabric. Knee length, with a contour waistband for less bulk at the actual waist, to wear with a little black polo shirt or short-sleeve sweater and black flat loafers or ballet slippers. Wouldn't that rock? With a black short-handled bag and black sunglasses, of course.

Now that it's February I'm dying to sew for spring. It's because I grew up in the south; I think spring starts right after the shiftless folks take down their giant blinking inflatable outdoor Santa. I walk out of my front door every day now thinking "Where's my forsythia?" I'll be shivering in cotton prints on March 1 again, I just know it.

  1. It looks like a wrap dress, is that why the pockets are off?she’s cramming her hand down in it pretty hard too. But then I suppose the chest pockets would be off too……

  2. I love that big houndstooth-y print. There was a 3/4-sleeve Isaac Mizrahi cardigan at Target this winter in a similar pattern that I loved.Your future skirt (should the fates allow) sounds fabulous. It’d be cute w/red or turquoise shoes & bag, too.

  3. I am the same way about spring. Winter is December and January. It’s mid-February, time to warm up! I will never get used to the extension of cold weather into May.

  4. Oh, wow, I’m going to be surprised if Erin doesn’t buy that little cardigan! It’s even on sale!I will totally keep my eyes open for that fabric in NYC. How much do you need for a circle skirt? And as for shivering in cotton prints, I’ll be right there with you; I’ve got so many cute patterns I want to sew up, and of course I think they would ALL be best in cotton prints.

  5. It’s no hippie dress, but I want you to know that today I am wearing a skirt I just got from Boden that has Fist-Sized Polka Dots! I promise always to think of it as my Dress-A-Day skirt.

  6. BB– I *want* those polka dots! And I think I’ll be hitting Target later for that sweater. I hate to order online from Target when there’s one every ten blocks here … I need four yards for a circle skirt if it’s 45″. I can make do with three if it’s 60″. Thanks! And a turquoise shirt and bag! Yes!

  7. Yes, I hate Boden’s prices, but I’m trying to train myself to buy a few excellent things instead of lots of cheap junk. Or so I keep saying, to console myself over the loss of Target.Fortunately, as I’ve mentioned here before, Boden’s clothing rarely fits me anyway. So I order, admire the prints, and send them right back. Eventually Boden may catch on and adjust their sizing to less Britishly shaped persons, at which point I’ll have to unsubscribe from the catalogue for my own safety. But the skirt fits and is wicked cute.
