Thinking About Underwear: Thinx

There are a lot of products out there that operate on the buy-one-give-one (BOGO) model — probably the best known are TOMS Shoes and Warby Parker — but none of them have really sparked my interest, mostly because the “buy one” of the BOGO model hasn’t been something I needed or wanted. After all, it’s not efficient to buy something you don’t want just to give someone else something they need; easier just to contribute directly.

However, I was recently contacted by THINX, which makes women’s underwear and sells it on a BOGO model. Their schtick is that the underwear has built in “protection” (of the anti-leak sort, it’s not electrified or anything) and by buying a pair, you send reusable washable cloth menstrual pads to a girl in the developing world. (Not sure why this is a big deal? Read this. Check out some of Rose George’s writing on this issue, too.) And I figured, hey, everyone needs underwear …

They sent me a couple of (free) pairs to try out, and they were very nice, as underwear goes. I tend to wear either super-cheap Target brand or Hanky Panky, and quality-wise, the Thinx pairs were closer to the higher end of the scale.  They sent me a couple of pairs in size large (42 hip; their sizes go up to a 47 inch hip). They were comfy, and although I didn’t get much of a chance to put the leak-protection to the test, Thinx seemed like an excellent option for women who have irregular cycles and hate having to wear liners every day (or for women who have mild stress incontinence and a bad case of the sneezes). They’re supposed to be antimicrobial as well, but I haven’t yet found my microscope since we moved and wasn’t all that excited about checking that particular claim personally …

The most-absorbent pair (the hiphuggers) are very expensive (>$40); the rest are about the same as a pair of top-of-the-line undies. If you amortize the cost of liners over the life of a pair of THINX … you’re probably better at this kind of math than I am. They do feel very sturdy (not in the “sturdy as a euphemism for ugly” way, honest) and I imagine they would hold up pretty well. They look … exactly like normal underwear. (I wore them to the gym and no one pointed/laughed in the locker room.)  And they only come in black, which makes sense given their purpose. The lining material makes you think they wouldn’t breathe well, but I didn’t notice any problems at all. I think they’d make great travel underwear — they wash and dry fast, and they seem like they wouldn’t feel horrible after a fourteen-hour  plane ride.

My verdict: if you need this particular underwear functionality, Thinx are for you. If you just want to have nice-looking underwear, Thinx may also be for you, and either way, you help girls go to school, so bonus!

PS: In addition to sending me two free pairs, Thinx also offered me an affiliate ad, which you’ll see in the sidebar. If you’d like to buy them directly, the link is here.

Today's Pattern Story (and sale): Butterick 5832

Butterick5832

Yes, it is a nice day. Isn’t it?

Yes, I am glad that I came out to the club with you and “the boys”.

Yes, it’s good to get out of the office and do a little informal business.

Yes, I’m a good sport not to be offended that they wouldn’t let me golf. Or wear trousers. Or drive the golf cart. Or sit in the dining room. Or park my car in the parking lot. Or come in the front door.

Yes, Danny’s a riot. Absolutely a scream. That joke about women lawyers? That must always have them in stitches at his firm.

Yes, I do make a great cup of coffee. That *is* one of my many excellent work qualifications, in addition to being editor of the law review and my Supreme Court clerkship.

Yes, I am imagining you all dying of massive coronaries as you grunt and smoke and drink and make unnecessary comments about my ass. (Yes, I can hear you.)

No, I didn’t say that last thing out loud.

Today’s pattern is from MOMSPatterns … and Jen is having a sale! She has more than 400 clearance patterns under $5, and they’re 75% off THAT with the code ‘bigsale’ until April 5. And she’s throwing in 15% off all OTHER patterns for the month of April  just for Dress A  Day readers (no foolin’!). Use the code ‘sewingbasket’.

Advance 2754

Callista: This year, Marjorie, is going to see the fulfillment of all of our plans! We’re going to land the Thompson account! Captain Montrose will propose! And little Timmy — darling little Timmy — will finally learn to spell “accommodate”!

Marjorie: If you say so, C. Is there any cake left?

I don’t know about you, but I always start to get that new-year itch the day after Christmas. I don’t want to wait until January 1 to start thinking about next year … which is annoying to everyone else who is still picking through the Christmas cookies.

[This pattern is on sale right now at MOMSPatterns — 25% off until midnight CST  on the 27th with code “Crimbo” (Jen married a Brit).]

Do you have resolutions, sewing or otherwise, for 2013? I’m working on a post about mine right now. Also, what do you want me to post more of in 2013 (other than just posting more)?

Mailing It In

This is one of the chic-est mail order patterns I’ve seen:

I mean, look at the sunglasses, and the jaunty collar, and the nonchalant hands in the pockets! She doesn’t seem to mind at all that she’s thirty feet tall! And the townswoman looking on in awe seems pretty cool, too, and completely unafraid of being stomped on.

My favorite thing about mail-order patterns is the metadata on the envelope — I love the name and address, and the postmark, and the information about what newspaper (sometimes) it was ordered from. It personalizes it. I like to think about Mrs. Whoever Somebody sitting at the kitchen table, in her housedress with a cup of coffee, and clipping out the pattern order form and sending it in full of big plans for a new dress.

This giant woman set out this morning to go grocery shopping, and then at the last minute said “the heck with picking up a gallon of milk” and headed off to the local art museum. After that she’s going to sit out on the lawn with a book and a picnic, and if she gets around to it, she’ll pick up some milk at the deli before the kids get home from school.

I’ve only sewn up a couple of mail-order patterns, but I hoard them like crazy. In my mind they always smell slightly of strong coffee, whether they really do or not.

This pattern is on sale right now — Jen at MOMSPatterns is having a sale on all mail-order patterns, 50% off!

Only Four Pieces

Only four pieces sounds like a bad deal when it's a box of See's, but when it's a pattern, it sounds pretty nice … (especially to me because I'm still wrestling with Simplicity 2180, and by "wrestling" I mean "sobbing over with a seam ripper that is glowing red from friction").

Like with this great pattern from Michelle at OldPatterns.com (which, by the way, has had a major update, including a shopping cart! Woot!)

Advance_7965

Yep, this pattern supposedly only has four pieces: two bodice, and two skirt. I'm tempted to buy it just to open it up and marvel. Anyway, it's only $15 and it's B36, here.

I like how in this illustration you have Miss Burnt Orange, and Miss Purple, and then if you squint a little bit, you can see that Miss Print's print is burnt orange and purple. Which is not a combo I've tried, but by golly, I think it works. (Miss Burnt Orange and Miss Purple are both "why didn't I think of that?")

Coming up soon: more book reviews, a new shirtdress, and a Simplicity 1577 with *matched plaids*. Oh yeah.

Today's Pattern Story and Sale: McCalls 5107

McCalls_5107_35

Green Dress: If I fix my gaze firmly on the ground over there, I can't possibly be held responsible for anything that's going on to my right.

Blue Dress: Dammit, this propane torch won't light! And the man at the shop guaranteed instant ignition?

Plaid Dress: She thinks she's being so stealthy, but won't she be surprised to learn my dress is made of asbestos fiber?

(Yes, I *have* had too much pie today, why do you ask?)

Today's pattern is from Jen at MOMSPatterns, and she's having a HUGE sale tomorrow for Small Biz Saturday: use coupon code 'smallbiz' when you check out to save  25% This code is good until midnight EST on Saturday November 26, 2011. (PS: This code is good NOW for folks who read Dress A Day …)

Jumpin'

I'm *almost* done with my 8728 obsession (almost — stay tuned). I've started now to noodle around a bit with the idea of jumpers, for winter (or for what passes for winter, in California). I checked out MOMSPatterns for some inspiration:

Simplicity_3331

and

Simplicity_4766

And, of course, I think I may go back to last year's obsession, our friend Heidi, or even this similar BurdaStyle pattern:

Burda_4846

Although I'm afraid that perhaps what's really pulling me towards this pattern is the pocket topstitching, which I would almost certainly be too lazy to do. (And her truly exceptional liquid-eyeliner skills — at 40, is it too late for me to master that? I suppose it doesn't really go well with glasses …) And that armhole is a bit deep for me … even with a t-shirt under it, it can look weird.

There's also McCalls 5927, which has a gazillion great reviews on PatternReview — check out this  gorgeous dress & photo from Eugenia:
