(Re)Work it!

So somebody (please take credit in the comments if it was you!) let me know about Field Day Wearables in Oakland — they make adorable things like this out of reclaimed materials:

Field Day Pea Soup Jumper

The suspenders? Are genius, right? Definitely that falls in the “wish I’d thought of it” bucket. And if you are not near Oakland, California, fear not: they also have an Etsy store.

I know, I know, it’s very bayareaish, but their stuff is 1) adorable 2) wearable and 3) not ungodly expensive (of course still more expensive than making it yourself, but …). I think my favorite is the Black Sheet Dress (more pockets!). Plus, their models look happy and like women you’d like to talk to about sewing and comic books and the etiquette of using the swings at the playground when there are still small children there (my take: you can swing as long as there is at least one empty swing besides the one you use, and you relinquish your swing as soon as that empty swing is filled), instead of like they’re practicing their bitchface while wearing shoes made of broken glass and fire ants.

Squirrelly!

So thanks to Robin, I now know about Etsy seller Sew What's New Fabric's MOST FRIGHTENING FABRICS section. In short: it is the best selection of terrifying textiles extant.

This is the one that got me:

Squirrel Kicking Dog in Face Vintage Cotton Fabric

Yep, that's "Squirrel Kicking Dog In Face Vintage Cotton Fabric". (It does what it says on the tin!)

I'm assuming this was originally intended for pediatric scrubs to be worn at the Our Lady of Inappropriate Cartoons Children's Hospital, but I'm open to other theories.

Scary Chic

Simplicity_7431

I almost didn't post this fantastic dress (pattern on Etsy from Sandritocat) because of how painfully thin the model in the photo is — she's not smiling, she just moved her lips aside so we could see her clenched teeth —  and she looks so cold! Thank goodness for those pockets, at least her hands are warm.

Luckily, the illustrated view is a bit less grim.

This isn't my size (neither is the model) but if you're on the more petite side (and under 11 feet tall, which this model also seems to be) you might want to snap this up. It's much chic-er than I remember the 1970s being (and much chic-er than I was in the 1970s, although, to be fair, nobody in elementary school was wearing stuff like this, either). I wish it were my size, because I know I personally have about twenty-five yards of various shirting cottons that would work for a dress like this …

By The Numbers

Vintagenumbers

I love this (admittedly blinding) vintage cotton numbers fabric from Etsy seller thoroughbredthreads, but there's only a yard of it. What to do?

There is no excuse to ever be bored, by the way, if you have internet access and can type "novelty fabric" into Etsy's search window. You are sure to find stuff like this:

Scarykitty

and this:

Donotenter

My favorite thing about Etsy is that it seems to run to quilting-lengths, which I'm hardly ever tempted to buy (my fabric-buying philosophy being "go big or go home"). So it's pure window-shopping. Even when confronted with stuff like this
