Don't you want to go to Elgin, IL this weekend?

elgin vintage show

I know this will be tremendously irritating for those of you in Hackney and Singapore and San Francisco and whatnot, but if you're in Illinois (and I know *some* of you are), there's a vintage show in Elgin this weekend. Where's Elgin, you ask? Somewhere west of here. If you click on the image above you'll go to the organizer's web site and there are directions — and you can even take the Metra there! (Non-Americans, you can feel free to comment about how pitiful it is that the existence of commuter rail between two places is so rare that it must be remarked upon.)

I would be there, and probably dressed up, too (dress up in vintage and get $2 off? Sure, throw me in that briar patch!) if I weren't already committed to packing the vintage I already own this weekend, in prep for The Move of the Century. (I haven't moved since pre-2000, so I believe I am justified in calling this The Move of the Century.)

If you go, take pictures! Look for The Sewist! Don't buy anything I wouldn't buy (okay, you're pretty safe there). Have fun storming the castle!

  1. Okay now. I understand you are having blog problems, but where are the DRESSES???;-)I always log on to your blog first thing in the morning to look at beautiful dresses and remind myself that there is some beauty in the world. I think I’m going through withdrawal.Hope to see some midriff details or a scarf collar soon!PS On theme with your post, the LSU Costume Museum is having a vintage clothing sale in the Baton Rouge, LA, area next weekend.

  2. See, now that would’ve made my last trip to Chicago where I was staying in Elgin WAY more interesting. Ah well. Elgin scares me. (“Hummus? What do those look like? I don’t think we sell them”)

  3. Sigh.. I won’t be able to go, unfortunately being in the SF Bay area. I do hope that someone will take pics of the Elgin Marvels….

  4. It’s not irritating for us in Hackney – we’ve got our own vintage fashion fair over at Battersea Arts Centre on Sunday. I’ve got my ticket already. 🙂

  5. I’m in Hertfordshire (but Hackney born), so this show is out of my reach – and as I have to be drugged to get on a plane in ‘peacetime’, I’m not about to board one in the current climate. (Having said that, should a certain delicious British actor decide to appear on the NY stage, as threatened, I may just have to go.) SO, thanks Melissa, for mentioning the fair over at Battersea. If I can find the energy on Sunday, I might just be there. Esther A.

  6. Those of you in the SF area, don’t despair: next weekend (Sept 16/17) you can attend the San Francisco Vintage Fashion Expo. There is even a coupon for discounted admission on the web site. http://www.vintageexpo.com/ Stop by and say hi if you attend. I’ll be bringing large size vintage patterns.anna newman

  7. Esther, I know that particular fair travels around, so it’s probably worth a look at their site to see if they’re coming closer to you. I know they’re back at Battersea in October (I *think* the 22nd).

  8. *drools* As a taller girl, vintage fashions often don’t fit me, but hey, it would be great to window shop. Too bad I missed it when it was in the St. Paul area. Maybe next year.Amy

I love Elgin and the Midwest, I’m from around there. But must we invite non-Americans to scoff? What other country is as BIG as the USA and has a train to every town, anyway? 😦

  12. I sell at the Elgin (and St.Paul) shows and if any of you other rabid Dressaday readers are in the areas when they occur I recommend going. I had WAY more fun when I came just to dress up and shop than I do now that I sell, but such is life. Lots of dealers, lots of clothes, and Elgin isn’t *that* bad. Not sure about the Hummus bit though. Although if you want Tacos or Tortas, there’s plenty of that.

  13. Oh, I had even considered going to Louisiana next weekend! I could have gone to the show!I bought some lovely vintage dresses for very reasonable prices the last time I was in Baton Rouge. It was a very comforting shopping trip; everything else about being back home was stressful and miserable, but buying adorable dresses to wear to parties in NYC reminded me that yes, I really did break free of the Deep South.
