Another Biased Opinion

Hey folks! Remember this dress? Well, Anna of Booty Vintage (large sized patterns!) offered to scan and send in her similar pattern, for people who wanted to see the back of the envelope, as well. And here it is! Wasn't that kind of her?

Here's the back. Such a lovely dress … so hard to put pockets in it … sigh.

I really love the brown version. I don't know why, but I think that shade of chocolate brown is so chic … especially when (as you can, in an illustration) match your accessories so perfectly.

I'd also like to make myself crazy by trying to work out how to do this with stripes. Thin, pencil-width stripes, arranged so that they looked solid at the gathered parts. Nutso, right? But oh, so worth it if it worked!

  1. Wauw…that would be interesting with stripes…no pockets, but you could live with that, right? For that design, I know I could!

  2. Hell, work a dress like that and who needs pockets – people will be vying to carry your wrap and fetch you drinks! (I know, a girl always needs a place for her keys, just in case – and maybe strap a stiletto to your thigh?)I love the chocolate brown lately too, especially now that I’ve got Jack Purcells in that color, that I wear CONSTANTLY, enough to make me realize I need to knit a cardie to go with, which is my current project. (They go with almost everything, but not that dress.)The stripe thing would be amazing, and worthy of some kind of prize. Speaking of, I bid on a whole mess of GREAT polka dot fabric on eBay the other day (light blue, dark blue, red, jade green and spring green on white) – I didn’t win but if I had I was going to send you a circle-skirt’s worth. Next time…

  3. (Brand new reader of this blog, and I love it!) Re: chocolate brown. I’ve been wearing chocolate brown evening wear for years…it really stands out in the sea of black (or red) that you usually get past 6pm.

  4. Since I started drooling over 40’s patterns, I’ve seen about a dozen variations of this asymmetrical gathering thing–such a great look! I saw one on ebay the other day that had continuous gathers along one big s-curve seam from the shoulder to the opposite hip. Alas, it was bust 32, and I figured it would be impossible to size…Here’s another nice variation from Decades of Style: http://www.decadesofstyle.com/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=15

  5. I bought the new reprint from Vogue, put I haven’t made it yet. I want to use the skull jersey knit fabric at Reprodepot.com

  6. Chocolate brown looks *great* with the right pink.If you use thin stripes, why not pleat the fullness instead of gathering it? As long as you use a drapy fabric, it’ll look great, and if you’re clever, you can pleat the stripes into a solid, always a cool effect.

  7. Why I like chocolate brown: Because it looks a LOT better on me than black does. For fancy dress, I always go for chocolate brown or midnight blue. Both are “kinder” in terms of coloration than black is and they definitely stand out in that sea of black at formal occasions.

  9. Various shades of bluish greens, or greenish blues, go very well with chocolate brown. Coral is good, too.

  11. My cousin bought a pattern like this, or nearly identical to it, a few years back and she STILL won’t tell me what she paid for it! And her mother is no longer with us, so no chance of the info getting back to her, with the resulting shocked look and raised eyebrows, even tho’ we are in our late 50s now…. It is such a fabulous design, in all its lovely iterations; I am rooting for my cousin to one day have some semblance of the figure needed to wear it! As for me, I will be happy just cheering her on, as well as you young darlings who look so great in these vintage styles I love so much!
