Would someone please throw a party?

ebay item 120144108018

Seriously, would someone throw a party? I know at least five people who need an excuse to wear this dress. We may have to wait a while, because flocked gingham (flocked TAFFETA gingham) isn't really a late-July, early-August kind of thing, but still.

Here are the requirements for the kind of party needed to showcase this dress:

  • grown-up drinks
  • soft lights
  • 'sophisticated' canapés, circa 1955 — e.g., pigs in blankets
  • a nice low armless chair so you can sit and spread out the skirt
  • red lipstick

That last requirement is for the wearer, not the party … not everyone at the party has to wear red lipstick, although it wouldn't hurt. But seriously, that's it. How hard is that?

This dress is from seller Tori at Flashbak58 Bombshell Frocks, and it's a nice larger size … B42,W34!

The only thing is that I'm late posting this so there's only half a day left in the auction (I don't usually like to post things with less than three days to go …). Click on the image to grab your winter party frock now …

  1. The b works, not the w. Would definitely need the 50’s girdle to go along with it! Alas, I don’t live the kind of life where I’d ever wear it, but it IS adorable!

  2. Erin: I dream of having a party like that! I even have recipes for canapes that are appropriate, like cherry tomatoes stuffed with cream cheese and caviar.

  3. Thanks so much for posting this Erin! I LOVE this dress and was so tempted to keep it for myself but most vintage clothing sellers know how that goes, plus I am more of a 40’s kinda gal :)….I do have to add that out of all of the 50’s full skirted larger sized dresses I have owned/sold I have to say in all honesty that this dress is downright figure flattering on a curvier gal, now that’s a PLUS!

  4. With the proper witch’s hat (perhaps with sparkly moon slivers echoing the pockets?) and black stilettos, this would be amazing at a fancy Halloween party. Alas, I do not have the life or the bod for this one!

  5. It’s gorgeous! And I’d love to go to that party!(Pretty crinoline, rhinestone studs, and black pumps in a suede to match the velvet flocking, and of course seamed stockings… *swoon*)

  6. Omigosh! This is the cutest thing, and it is almost my size (the waist would work, the boobs would be kinda small…). I’d even have a place to wear it… Oh, well. Mazel Tov to whomever wins this!

  7. We’re having a ‘007’ party in November…Cocktails, canapes, tuxedos, and (most importantly) beautiful cocktail dresses. You’re all most welcome if you can find your way to Canada! We figured that the only way to get the menfolk interested in our fancy-dress ball, is to make it so cool they have no choice but to dress for the occasion. And really? What’s cooler than James Bond?Answer? That dress.

  8. With the flat little cocktail hat! Gotta have the cocktail hat too, preferably with a small black veil. The secret to getting husbands into tuxedos is just pointing out that the cost of renting twice is the same as owning, so just buy the darn thing, then wear it everywhere. I had a pink champaigne reception/opening of my pink and black hat room in my home, hubby put on his tux and handed out flutes to my friends as they arrived. They all now think he is the classiest guy ever.MORE COCKTAIL PARTIES!

  9. And, it has POCKETS! I’d wear that dress, even at my age, if it fit. With that little cocktail hat, Jill. I have just the thing (among my collection). And Bernie is the classiest guy ever! Well, let’s include Sherm on that one – the two of them are the classiest – in their Borsalino hats, you bet!Erin, I hope the lady who buys this dress does wear it – with the red lipstick.

  10. Comment aside: I severely dislike that term “rockabilly”. How can you classify this dress (or any of the fashions of that time) with such a term! Shame! Whoever thought that up should be made to wear something very ugly. I am aware the term was probably originally used for some of the music of the time, but not fashions, PLEASE!

  12. Petticoats, you need real 1956-style petticoats to go with this. Here’s a pattern I ran across in my web browsing:How to Make Very Full Petticoats Like Alice Lon Wore on the Lawrence Welk TV ShowErin, I think a petticoat like this might lend itself to Roller Skating – with 48 yards of 1 inch satin ribbon on the edges … the mind boggles.CMC

  14. I have a similar dress in blush with black flocking. I wore it to my daugher’s 1st birthday party, so you don’t really need the “cocktail” life style to get use out of it. But I am kind of tacky ;).

  15. A fabulous dress and I’ve been watching it all week. Amazing how were all starting to think alike and covet the same things on this blog. Unfortunately it needs two more inches of waistline (or I need two inches less) so I’ve got to pass on it. This dress screams (can dresses scream?) for the platter hat and a pair of elbow length gloves to cradle the cigarette holder with (oh so naughty) and definitely the pearls!
