wild print alert

I thought the deer-head print dress was going to be the weirdest print we'd see for a while, but then Lisa sent me this one yesterday. This is just a cute little halter dress with matching bolero (I'm showing the bolero picture, because the buttons are so adorable), right?

Check out the close-up view of the pattern:

cannibals

This would be the perfect dress to wear to a cryptozoology conference, don't you think? Imagine the fun you could have — people could have Bigfoot sightings while they were talking to you! (If actual cryptozoologists want to jump in here and let me know which unattested hominid species this fabric might be portraying, I'd be interested to hear your theories.)

There must be a lost episode of "In Search of …" that deals with these fun guys, right? I'm sure it was slotted to run right between the ones on Jack the Ripper and Loch Ness. Lots of stock footage of Pacific islands, shot from the air, while Nimoy's voiceover intimates that IF these guys existed, THIS would be EXACTLY the kind of island they'd be running amuck over.

The dress itself has some slight flaws, but nothing like what you'd expect, considering the original owner probably had to flee the island in terror. Click on the image to check out the eBay auction. It's 34/28/40, and has a BIN price of $199. Well, a price in dollars of $199 — what price you will pay for angering the ancient gods by wearing this has yet to be determined.

  1. I’m confused at the purpose/point of finding the most hideous things you can find – on Godforsaken ebay, of all places – then gleefully bashing and criticizing as if someone, somewhere might actually disagree and think they’re not hideous items, but fine, I’ll play. Nevermind that dress shouldn’t even be something you consider for editorial. Nevermind that it shouldn’t even be something you have time to find. It looks as if it’s a mass production piece, like those you’d find at a Sears or JC Penney, with some type of no-name tag that has MADE IN CHINA blasted across its front. Of course, this can only mean that more than likely ten minutes of actual thought went into the creation of this item (a full fifty minutes shorter, I’m sure, than it took for you to come up with your carefully created commentary on it), along with the other ten or twelve stock pieces the company churned out that year. This is the type of item you’d see on one of the elders in your church, something a woman may have bought fifteen years ago from the dime store and still has the carefully matched shoe to go with it. I can only imagine that a print like this would attract said woman because she more than likely has dozens of prints along this line, since this kind of woman likes such things. When you think of this item in this manner, it makes perfect sense. Why the hell it’s a focal point for Dress a Day today? That’s another story.I don’t understand the purpose behind this item. It’s ugly and probably the only of its kind that exists. There’s not much else to say about it.

  2. As confused as anonymous is about the dress, I am more confused as why she (hiya J) continues to read a blog she so fully despises. Must have a lot of time on her hands. It does make one chuckle that in one paragraph she says it looks “mass-produced” and then follows with “probably the only of its kind that exists”. oh, it is to laugh. Now, back to the dress which is far more interesting. What great detail on the jacket closure and the pockets are awesome. I absolutely love the print. LOVE! With the jacket on, the dress has an asian feel, what with the diagonal closure and all. I think the red accents this. But the print is all over the place. It reminds me of things polynesian, kindergarten art, and native american. And finally the colors. I seem to find a lot of prints in the grey with yellow as the secondary color. I like the way yello/grey look, but they are not a color combo that I can pull off. RED on the other hand works great here. The boldness of it is strengthened by the accents at the collar and pockets, and the points at those areas are such a great detail.

  3. Wow, fascinating print indeed. Who thinks of these things? Who sits designing such extraordinary busy patterns, and then who decides that dress with bolero is the obvious pattern choice? I love it. I wouldn’t wear it, but I think the world would be a poorer place without things like this. There was a time when we were more accepting of crazy prints, I think.

  4. Zowza!!! Thats a busy dress. I love the bolero tho and the buttons. The pockets are very nice too, but I love the buttons the best. I dont care for the dress alone I like it with the bolero. I would probably think about buying the dress if it was in another print.

  6. It is truly weird to see so much venom aimed at such a benign blog. I laughed at this entry. I thought it was cute. Focal points? Who needs them?

  7. I actually appreciate a healthy dose of opposition and think its equally childish for people to feel compelled to “stick up” for Erin as it is for somebody to post an opposing perspective. Take your own advice, ladies, and grow up.Meanwhile, I have to agree, this dress isn’t worth talking about.

  8. Never mind that “nevermind” is not a construction that should be considered for editorial.I don’t like the dress either, though. I’m not really one for that kind of “cute.”

  9. Erin, you have a nice blog. It’s a happy place, where the readers can share their comments on the dresses you post, some of which we like, and some of which we don’t, but we’ve all managed to be civil, creating a happy dressaday paradise. Now there’s one poisonous insect, spreading its irritant amongst us all. Why don’t you go ahead and squash it?As for “anonymous” who likes opposition, why don’t you go find a political blog and hunker down there? I’m sure you can find all the contention you want.As for me, I think I like the carefully chosen facings best – the solid blocks of burgundy that punctuate the print. I could never wear that dress myself; I find the print too restless, but it’s a big world, with room for all different tastes

  10. My goodness, but Ms. Anonymous at the top seems to having quite the bad day.Of course, I think this dress is absolutely fantastic and I’d wear it in a heartbeat (oh to be able to wear something 34/28/40). The details on the dress pockets and bolero front closure are to die for! *swoon*–Lydia
