I love the vintage patterns and have a ton of them, leftovers from my Mother. Do you have any hints or tips that you use when you sew them? I’ve made a few, but they invariably turn out the wrong size, and use a lot of fabric.

Orangemami, are you double-checking your measurements against the pattern’s measurements, or are you assuming that if you wear a 14 pattern now, you wear a 14 vintage pattern? Pattern measurements changed about 3 times, officially, between the 1930’s and the 1970’s, NOT counting the “Today’s Fit” patterns – and those sizes are different from your off-the-rack size, as well. My apologies if you already know this stuff, but many folks don’t seem to, or don’t remember it in the heat of the moment. Next question: are the patterns always the wrong size by the same amount, that is, are they consistently wrong? The best fast test for the amount of fit you need is to lay the vintage pieces on top of corresponding modern pattern pieces that DO fit you: so, a modern one-piece front with darts which fits you, would go underneath the vintage one-piece front with darts. You could see immediately if it needed to be wider, or longer, etc.; do the same thing with the back, the sleeve, and the skirt. It will take only a few minutes to see if you need to make alterations to the pattern so that it fits you properly.* You also have the option of pin-fitting the pattern: pin the pieces together, as if you were making a paper dress, and try it on. You should be able to tell quickly if it will be too small, as is. Better a few minutes flinging the paper around, than to actually make up the entire garment and find out it doesn’t fit!*This has the advantage of showing you immediately whether, and where, a pattern fits or does not fit.
