… and the rest of the story …

Hilatron band

Remember the sad, sad tale of Hilary, who couldn't wear yellow (but loved it)? (If you don't, click that link and scroll down to the comments.)

Well, Hilary didn't give up! She found a way to have her yellow, and wear it too! And isn't it cute? I love (as you might imagine) the polka-dot bands. The *very same* polka-dot bands that keep the yellow Hilary likes from clashing with her skin (which doesn't like yellow).

Here's a photo of Hilary in the dress, but before she did the bottom band (all SIXTEEN FEET of it — hemming a big skirt is not for the weak of purpose):

All I'm saying is, you can wear it if you really try …

  1. That dress is absolutely fricking adorable. I LOVE the black sash.I’m off to have a friend help me see if I can make my Sew U patterns work for my size! I hope to be sending in my “first” soon.

  2. I’m another one who can’t wear yellow without people asking me when my last medical checkup was. Using a color that is flattering next to my skin could open up so many possibilities! I have to control myself, though, because dh seems to think I have enough fabric already, silly man.

  3. Yellow is such a pretty color, so bright, so sunny…too bad it looks best in nature or on walls. So unfair. The yellow on this dress works on Hilary. Pretty hair.

  4. Sewers are so smart!I made a flamenco skirt with a purple and white polka dot band/flounce at the bottom… loads of work, but well worth it when I danced. Hilary, I bet you can really move in this dress : )~Becky

  5. What a good idea, and what a darling dress! I love the black/white/yellow combo. Congratulations Hilary! (And it looks like it fits you like a dream – that shoulder/chest area can be tricky. I’m impressed!)

  6. The dress is charming and her solution to avoid having the yellow cloth against her skin is resourceful, but why does she completely undo the wisdom of her clothing color choices by dying her hair in a color that has so much yellow in it? That carrot top shade is full of yellow/gold tones. Then she picks yellow/gold shoes to wear with the dress. I’m confused. With that much pink in her skin, she should try wearing chocolate hair and violet dresses instead of trying to bully yellow into submission. Now that would be a triumph.

  7. Thanks, everyone, for your kind comments! (Confidential to Anonymous: the yellow tones in my hair cannot be blamed on any dye, but on the fact that my real hair *is* yellow! Guess nature made a faux pas…perhaps that explains my strange compulsion to bully some of her colors.)

  8. That skin tone often goes with ‘carrot top’ hair provided by nature. My hair has shades of red, gold, copper, and light yellow blonde, and the last thing I would ever do is dye it–I’ve never tried, but I suspect it would be disastrous.I can wear some shades of nearly any color, you just have to test any fabric or garment you are purchasing to make sure that hair, skin and clothing aren’t going to clash. Or you can always go with the safe choice–good old black and white, heh. 🙂

  10. It looks lovely, and she wears it with deserved confidence. I myself am a Pale Porcelin Princess, with a fondness for gold/gold and white brocade, and I have to rely on the kindness of an intervening strip of blacksomething – velvet or fur – to keep from looking a bit seedy.

  11. Julia, it’s a current Vogue pattern, and you can find it in their Vintage section. I can’t link at the moment, but it’s a 1957 pattern (I believe).
