Drabble #11

red lace dress

Whenever she takes me off the hanger, I feel such a shiver of hope. Down goes my back zip; in she steps, and does a little wiggle … if I had breath, I’d hold it, because she certainly is. Sometimes I make it past her hips, and once she got it zipped up past her bra strap, but usually she and I feel the strain in the seams at the same time. I can’t do anything about it, but she always stops. I really don’t care if she can ever wear me, I’m just happy she keeps me around. Someday …

Thanks to SDN for the kernel of the idea …

  1. I bet there are few of us who don’t have a dress that gets subjected to this process at least every few months. Erin–I love this drabble –your best drabble yet! Thank you so much. Holly

  2. Thank you! This makes me feel better about those dresses I keep hanging around…I can imagine that they don’t mind if they ever fit!!

  3. That drabble was so great. I saw myself in there somewhere . . . having a fabulous dress but being devoid of the guts to wear it . . .I usually think lace is cloying, but in this incarnation, hot dog! (o-the-humanity, did I just make the most.stale.pun EVER with that “in carnation” joke?) I’ll go flog myself now.

  4. Dahling, I feel this dress’s pain in the deepest possible way. Erin, in one of my closets sits an evening gown of scarlet, with a plunging neckline, high side slit with a faux wrap drape, and a huge rhinestone buckle riding on the hip.Once upon a time it fit, fit perfectly because it was custom-made for yours truly. Then came the time I could wear it if I held in my stomach very hard and took Gas-Ex regularly. Then…well let me only say it sits reproachfully in the back of one of my huge walk-in closets. Someday I vow to wear it again, even if it is only in the privacy of my boudior with the zipper open in the back!

  5. Poor darling little layer-cake dress, she deserves to be worn! (Though I know I’d snag the lace on everything.) Anybody else have trouble with clicking through? I got sent to a site with super cute scooter dresses but it kept shutting my browser down. I had half a thought to rescue this dress, though it’s surely too small for me and decidedly not a good color for me. But thanks for the inspiration, Erin!

  6. Great story, although I was hoping this dress would escape notice… I’ve had my eye on it, since it’s just my size, style, and color, and would be perfect for an upcoming formal! It’s such a gorgeous dress!

  7. I have a dress in my closet that is very close in color to this one. It doesn’t fit me now and it certainly didn’t fit me when I bought it, but that dress and I went on a journey together and I wore it for one brief and shining moment. There were a lot of tryings on and straining seams on the way to that day.
